The looming Easter long weekend, when many South Africans drive long distances and road accidents increase, will certainly put additional pressure on the national blood supply. But Mlambo points out that incidents of trauma make up only a fraction of the demand for blood.

Find a Blood Donation Center
The center’s findings indicated that despite the increase of the number of blood donors (297,700) in 2015, the country is still in shortage of blood donation, as 2016 recorded a number of 310,680 donors, which represents 0.95% of the total population.

Four women died during childbirth at the Ejisu Government Hospital, last year, due to acute shortage of blood at the facility.
